The River

I’ve seen the river’s

many faces,

seen hope twinkle

in her eyes like a thousand stars

seen to the bottom

of her soul

when the rains

refuse to come

I’ve followed this river,

let her carry me

upon her back

like a leaf

and deliver me like

one of her better angels

to the arms

of the sea

I’ve seen my eyes

in hers, and

felt the same

hopes and fears

about when and how

it all ends

and what will remain

and what will be next
